About The Song
You Will entered the country charts after its November 11, 1993 release as the third single from Patty Loveless’s album Only What I Feel. Pam Rose, Mary Ann Kennedy and Randy Sharp wrote the song. Emory Gordy Jr. produced the track. Epic Records issued it with “You Don’t Know How Lucky You Are” on the B-side. The recording runs 3:16.
The song first appeared as the title track of Anne Murray’s 1990 album You Will. Murray released it as a single in 1991; it did not chart. Loveless recorded her version in early 1993 for her first project on Epic after leaving MCA.
She had already cut the song once before. In the summer of 1992, while still under contract to MCA, she recorded it and performed it on the September 1992 CBS television special “Women in Country.” Vocal-cord problems forced surgery on October 21, 1992. After a nine-week recovery the tone of her voice had changed. Every track recorded that summer had to be done again. “You Will” was the first song she re-recorded with Gordy.
The single spent 23 weeks on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and peaked at number 6 for the week of February 19, 1994. It reached number 48 on the RPM Country Tracks chart in Canada and finished 1994 at number 70 on the Billboard year-end country list.
The lyric addresses a person who is walking away toward someone else. The narrator states, without anger or pleading, that the new arrangement will not last. When the truth becomes clear and the other woman leaves, the person will return. The confidence is quiet and absolute: “You will.”
Only What I Feel itself peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and later received platinum certification. Its lead single, “Blame It on Your Heart,” reached number 1. “You Will” sat between that hit and the later top-three single “How Can I Help You Say Goodbye.” The album marked Loveless’s first full release after the surgery and the label change, and the re-recorded version of this song opened that new chapter.
The track continues to appear on later compilations. Its place in the catalog rests on the simple, patient certainty it carries: the knowledge that some returns are only a matter of time.

Lyric
When you know and you will
It wasn’t meant to be
When she walks and she will
You’re gonna come to me
When she lies and she will
When all is said and done
When you cry and you will
You’re gonna want to run
So go ahead and do what you gotta do
It’s really not up to me
But the day will come when you finally see
Where you wanna be
Then you’re gonna be back
When you hurt and you will
Who’s gonna sympathize?
Well, she won’t, but I will
Then you’ll realize
So go ahead and do what you gotta do
It’s really not up to me
But the day will come when you finally see
Where you wanna be
Then you’re gonna be back
She lies and she will
I know (I know) you will (you will)
I just know you will
So go ahead and do what you gotta do
It’s really not up to me
But the day will come when you finally see
Where you wanna be
Then you’re gonna be back
When she lies (she lies), she will
(And you know she will)
When you hurt and you will
(I know, I know, I know you will)
I know you will
I know you will (I know you will)
I know you will
I know you will
