Patty Loveless – Hurt Me Bad (In a Real Good Way)

About The Song

On Down the Line entered the country charts after its May 19, 1990 release as the lead single and title track from Patty Loveless’s fourth studio album of the same name. The album itself appeared four days earlier on May 15 through MCA Nashville. Kostas wrote the song. Tony Brown produced it. The B-side was “Feelings of Love.” The track runs just over three minutes.
Kostas had already supplied Loveless with earlier material, including the number-one hit “Timber, I’m Falling in Love.” When Brown first heard “On Down the Line,” he questioned whether the original third verse suited her. Kostas reworked that final verse so the song matched the project. The single spent 20 weeks on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and peaked at number 5 for the week of July 21, 1990. In Canada it reached number 3 on the RPM Country Tracks list. It finished the year at number 54 on the Billboard country year-end chart and number 27 in Canada.
The album On Down the Line was recorded in Nashville between December 1989 and January 1990. It peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and later produced two more top-ten singles, “I’m That Kind of Girl” and the top-twenty “The Night’s Too Long.”
The song follows a working life measured in small daily calculations. A person stretches a nickel into a dime, sweats for the dollar, and watches half go to the landlord and half to the tax man. There is no paid vacation and little consolation. The only course left is to keep doing the best one can—laughing and crying, living and dying, on down the line. Love is offered as the remaining claim on what is left: the soul goes to Jesus, the heart to the partner, and the rest is available if wanted. A brief daydream of wealth appears—a Cadillac and a new name—then yields to the same road with the same companion.
The single kept Loveless visible after the platinum success of Honky Tonk Angel. It remains one of the clearer statements of everyday pressure that she recorded in that period, delivered without decoration and tied directly to the album that carried her name into the early 1990s.

Lyric

Would of never found you
If he had wanted to stay
Oh he hurt me bad
In a real good way
Well he opened my eyes
To a world beyond
That impossible dream
I was livin` on
And I thank my lucky stars each night
When you`re in my arms
And your holding me tight
I realize what it means
To have your true love
I would of never found you
If he had wanted to stay
Oh he hurt me bad
In a real good way
And I thank my lucky stars each night
When you`re in my arms
And your holding me tight
I realize what it means
To have your true love
When I look back on my life before
How my heart got shattered
With a slammin` door
I see how it all had to be
For the two of us
Oh the river of tears
That flow from my eyes
Was only moving me on
To this paradise
I would of never found you
If he had wanted to stay
Oh he hurt me bad
In a real good way
Oh he hurt me bad
In a real good way
