About The Song
The Statler Brothers released “You’ll Be Back (Every Night in My Dreams)” on March 13, 1982, as the third single from their album Years Ago. The album had appeared the previous year on Mercury Records. Jerry Kennedy produced the track. The B-side was “We Ain’t Even Started Yet,” written by group members Harold Reid and Don Reid.
Wayland Holyfield and Johnny Russell wrote the song. Russell recorded it first for Polydor in 1978 and reached number 24 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Conway Twitty included a version on his 1980 album Rest Your Love on Me. The Statler Brothers’ take became the best-known.
Their single climbed to number 3 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. It spent 18 weeks on the list and finished at number 46 on the year-end country chart for 1982. The song followed earlier Years Ago singles “Don’t Wait on Me” and the title track.
The story is straightforward. Friends offer help getting over a lost love. The singer answers that he is not blue or broken. There is no reason to miss the person because she returns every night in his dreams. She will be back, and it will not even seem as if she is gone. He will not be alone. The second verse dismisses the idea of walking the floor until dawn or watching the door and sitting by the phone. Why worry and moan just because she is gone? The chorus returns with the same quiet certainty.
The arrangement is spare and warm, built around the group’s familiar four-part harmony. Bergen White handled the string arrangement. The record runs just under two minutes and forty seconds. It sits comfortably among the other tracks on Years Ago, an album that mixed new material with the reflective tone the Statlers often favored in the early 1980s.
The song arrived during a steady stretch of chart success for the group. They had already scored multiple top-ten country hits in the late 1970s and early 1980s. This one kept the momentum going before “Whatever” and later number-one records such as “Elizabeth.” It later appeared on several compilations, including The Definitive Collection and Gold.
Russell’s original had a modest run. The Statlers’ version found a wider audience through their polished delivery and the simple comfort of the lyric. The idea that dreams can close the distance left by absence gave the song its lasting appeal on country radio in the spring and summer of 1982.

Lyric
All my friends ask what can they do
To help me get over you,
But I’m not blue or broken in two
Why should I miss you?
‘Cause you’ll be back every night in my dreams
You’ll be back and it won’t even seem like you’re gone
No I won’t be alone
‘Cause you’ll be back every night in my dreams.
Walk the floor and cry until dawn,
Walk the floor and sit by the phone?
Oh no, not me
Why worry and moan just because you’re gone?
‘Cause you’ll be back every night in my dreams
You’ll be back and it won’t even seem like you’re gone
No I won’t be alone
‘Cause you’ll be back every night in my dreams.
‘Cause you’ll be back every night in my dreams
You’ll be back and it won’t even seem like you’re gone
No I won’t be alone
‘Cause you’ll be back every night in my dreams.
I’ll see you in my dreams, dreams, dreams
