Patty Loveless — Dreaming My Dreams With You

About The Song

Patty Loveless included “Dreaming My Dreams with You” as the seventh track on her 2005 album Dreamin’ My Dreams. The album came out on September 13 that year on Epic Records, produced by Emory Gordy Jr. and Justin Niebank. It was her final release for the label before Epic closed its Nashville division.

Allen Reynolds wrote the song. Waylon Jennings first recorded it on September 3, 1974, for his 1975 album Dreaming My Dreams. Jennings released it as a single that year and reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Crystal Gayle cut a version around the same time while Reynolds was producing her. The song has drawn covers from Alison Krauss, Emmylou Harris with Rodney Crowell, John Prine with Kathy Mattea, and others over the years.

Loveless recorded her take in memory of Jennings. She had owned his album as a teenager, around age 14 or 15, and the song stayed with her even after she forgot about it for a stretch. When Gordy played the track during song selection for the new record, she recognized it at once. She told interviewers she had always loved it and wanted to cut it, approaching the performance by drawing from Jennings while also imagining how Patsy Cline might have handled the material in the studio.

The lyrics follow someone looking ahead after a relationship ends. The singer hopes she will not make the same mistakes, that she has learned this time, and that she will find what she is reaching for the way it exists in her mind. Someday she will get over the other person and live through it. Still, she will always miss dreaming her dreams with them. She refuses to let the loss harden her. She would rather keep believing in love and give it away to the people she cares about most.

Loveless chose the album title because the phrase matched her own path. She had left Nashville as a teenager, returned in 1985, and found the chance to live out the work she had imagined. The record mixes covers and newer material. Richard Thompson’s “Keep Your Distance” opened the set and served as the only single. Other tracks came from Steve Earle, Jim Lauderdale and Leslie Satcher, Delaney Bramlett (with Dwight Yoakam on the duet “Never Ending Song of Love”), and a few co-writes involving Gordy.

Dreamin’ My Dreams debuted at number 29 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart on October 1, 2005, its peak, and stayed on the list for eight weeks. It reached number 175 on the Billboard 200. The project arrived after Loveless’s more acoustic and bluegrass-leaned records of the early 2000s and before she moved to independent labels for Sleepless Nights and Mountain Soul II.

Her version runs about four minutes and forty-three seconds. It sits quietly among the album’s other songs of longing, hard-won clarity, and persistence. The connection to Jennings gave the track an extra layer for listeners who knew the original, while the personal history Loveless brought to it kept the performance grounded in the years she spent finding her place in Nashville.

Lyric

I hope that I won’t be that wrong anymore
Maybe I’ve learned this time
I hope that I find what I’m reaching for
The way that it is in my mind
Someday I’ll get over you
I’ll live to see it all through
But I’ll always miss dreaming my dreams with you
But I won’t let it change me, not if I can
I’d rather believe in love
Give it away as much as I can
To those that I’m fondest of
Someday I’ll get over you
I’ll live to see it all through
But I’ll always miss dreaming my dreams with you
Someday I’ll get over you
I’ll live to see it all through
But I’ll always miss dreaming my dreams with you
I hope that I won’t be that wrong anymore
Maybe I’ve learned this time
I hope that I find what I’m reaching for
The way that it is in my mind
Someday I’ll get over you
I’ll live to see it all through
But I’ll always miss dreaming my dreams with you
Someday I’ll get over you
I’ll live to see it all through
But I’ll always miss dreaming my dreams with you
