About The Song
Lovin’ All Night entered country radio on June 14, 2003 as the lead single from Patty Loveless’s album On Your Way Home. Rodney Crowell wrote the song. Emory Gordy Jr. produced the recording. Epic Records released it with “Nothin’ Like the Lonely” on the B-side. The track runs 3:38.
Crowell first recorded the song for his 1992 album Life Is Messy. His version reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles and Tracks chart. Loveless’s cover arrived more than a decade later and became her final top-20 country hit.
The single spent 20 weeks on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and peaked at number 18 for the week of September 27, 2003. It also reached number 81 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album On Your Way Home, released later that year, peaked at number 7 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart.
The decision to record the song grew out of a shared stage. In 2002 Loveless and Crowell both appeared on the Down From the Mountain tour. Crowell hosted the shows and regularly performed “Lovin’ All Night.” One night in Roanoke, Virginia, he invited her to join him on the song. She accepted. When she later began choosing material for the new album she remembered that performance and asked her producer to contact Crowell so they could include it.
The lyric follows a couple who would rather stay in bed than face the workday. The narrator wants the covers pulled back over her head. The boss can wait. The night just spent together has set everything right, and she intends to live in that feeling as long as possible. Compliments exchanged in the early hours, the quiet of a town still asleep, and the simple declaration that lovin’ all night makes the world go round form the heart of the song.
The single marked a late-career commercial moment for Loveless on Epic. After the bluegrass-leaning projects Mountain Soul and the holiday album that followed, On Your Way Home returned her to a more mainstream country sound. “Lovin’ All Night” was the only top-20 single the album produced. The title track that followed peaked at number 29 and became her final appearance inside the country top 40.
The recording stands as a late collaboration between two artists who had known each other’s work for years. Crowell’s original had already proven itself a decade earlier. Loveless’s version brought the same story of reluctant mornings and lasting nights to a new audience and closed out her run of top-20 country hits with a song that began, for her, on a shared stage in Roanoke.

Lyric
Now, baby, pull the covers back over my head.
I don’t want to get it up outta this bed.
I don’t want to drag it on off to work.
That big boss man is really a flirt.
We’ve been lovin’ all night,
Just about settin’ me everything right.
Hope it don’t get me.
I’m gonna live it just as long as I can.
I’m gonna make it every part of my plan.
Lovin’ all night, hangin’ on tight,
No doubt about it, been lovin’ all night.
Well, you tell me I’m as pretty as a fresh cut flower,
When you show me how you love me in the wee small hours.
While everybody?s sleeping on around this town,
Lovin?’ all night makes the world go ’round.
We’ve been lovin’ all night,
Just about hittin’ me everything right.
Hope it don’t get me.
I’m gonna live it just as long as I can.
I’m gonna make it every part of my plan.
Lovin’ all night, hangin’ on tight,
No doubt about it, been lovin’ all night.
Ain’t no use talkin’ when you’re looking so fine;
When you move your body up a-close to mine.
We’ve been rocking with the rhythm of a beat of our own.
Baby, I’m gonna love you ?till the cows come home.
We’ve been lovin’ all night,
Just about hittin’ me everything right.
Hope it don’t get me.
I’m gonna live it just as long as I can.
I’m gonna make it every part of my plan.
Lovin’ all night, feelin’ all right,
No doubt about it, been lovin’ all night.
We’ve been lovin’ all night, hangin on tight.
Good God almighty, been loving all night, yeah.
Mmmmm, been lovin’ all night.
Been lovin’ all night.
Lovin’ all night, yeah,
Lovin’ all night,
Been lovin’ all night.
Memmmm. hey, ahh been lovin’ all night.
